When one thinks of Soviet science fiction, the mind is drawn to the intellectual challenges of the Strugatsky brothers or the realms of utopian satire, but Pelevin's novel is a totally different kettle of fish. Damilola Karpov is a drone pilot living in Byzantium, a massive futuristic city that floats in the sky above a post-apocalyptic Ukraine landscape.
His main function is to record the events and people below, or even slyly engineer events that could generate media thanks to the weapons carried aboard on behalf of S.N.U.F.F., the Special Newsreel/Universal Feature Film. Examining the relationship between the landlocked terrestrials and the glitter of the Big Byz city above, Pelevin in a light-hearted but serious manner reflects on the nature of media, war and human endeavour in a most entertaining fashion. ~ Maxim Jakubowski
