Walking the Nile by Levison Wood

Lovereading view...

In November 2013, former soldier Levison Wood embarked on one of the last great explorations; to walk the Nile from source delta. In this detailed, thoughtful, inspiring and dramatic book, recounting his walk along the length of the Nile, he uncovers the history of the Nile, yet through the people he meets and who help him with his journey, he comes face to face with the great story of a modern Africa emerging out of the past.

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. One of the world’s last firsts, walking the length of the River Nile from its source in Rwanda to the Egyptian coast, was the challenge that ex-soldier Levison Wood set himself in 2013, simply because he wanted an adventure that would test him to his limits. Some 4250 miles of unforgiving terrain, unstable regimes and violent local feuds lay ahead along a route that had defeated everyone from the Romans to Dr Livingstone. Accompanied by expert local guides, but nevertheless prone to hair-raising encounters, Wood gives an engaging account of his journey and the people and wildlife he meets along the way. He records traditional tribesmen and cattle herders’ struggle to survive in Sudan, and finds himself uncomfortably close to a battle. Gripping and illuminating, this is an account of an adventure by an explorer very much aware of the complexities of the world around him but determined to pursue his goal.

Synopsis

Walking the Nile by Levison Wood

A major Channel 4 series and a Sunday Times bestseller His journey is 4,250 miles long. He is walking every step of the way, camping in the wild, foraging for food, fending for himself against multiple dangers. He is passing through rainforest, savannah, swamp, desert and lush delta oasis. He will cross seven, very different countries. No one has ever made this journey on foot. Exploration and Africa are two of his great passions - they drive him on and motivate his inquisitiveness and resolution not to fail, yet the challenges of the terrain, the climate, the animals, the people and his own psychological resolution will throw at him are immense. The dangers are very real, but so is the motivation for this ex-army officer. If he can overcome the mental and physical challenges, he will be walking into history...
