Synopsis

Mister Candid by Jules Hardy

For 17 years, the FBI have been hunting for a murderer. For 17 years he has been ridding America of its scum and, strangely enough for a serial killer, would seem to be a genius with a heart of gold. Elusive as a ghost, they call him Mr Candid. And he is extremely dangerous.

Reviews

A serial killer is on the loose, but not the usual breed. Urban myth whispers of a 'Mr. Candid,
who, for the past 17 years, has been quietly and efficiently removing the parts of society that the law can

't reach. In prose that is both graceful and hard-hitting, Jules Hardy plays across the fuzzy lines that separate good from bad deeds and morality from law. -- The Times
Ephemeral shape-shifter, modern day Nemesis or just a figment of an overactive press imagination? No one is sure who Mister Candid is or if he really exists. What is certain is that he or someone like him steps in whenever the law quails at exacting retribution. The dilemma facing the authorities is how to act if and when they catch up with Mister Candid. With more than 90 murders to his credit, he1s a serial killer who has broken the law on a huge scale; but it could be argued he1s done the world a favour by ridding it of rapists, child molesters and murderers. Lieutenant Flanagan, absent without leave, frumpy fat nurse Bronwen, and agent Keeler all have their reasons for finding the elusive Mister Candid, aka Charlie Chum1 Kane, but they must sift through the horrific events that are buried in the past of his dysfunctional family before they can discover his true motivation. Mister Candid is a powerfully complex novel that explores the dark underside of life; incest, murder and pedophilia are woven into a compelling plot that turns moral imperatives upside down and leaves the reader sympathizing with a serial killer (Kirkus UK)'
