Until this final volume arrived on my doorstep, I was unaware of Treadwell's outstanding fantasy trilogy. Needless to say, I rushed to catch up with the earlier books (Advent and Anarchy). What can I say? It's wonderful and mesmerizing. Fantasy as I truly enjoy it, the stuff of myths, lanscapes and atmosphere rather than Tolkien-like monsters and elves and swordfights. Ten year old Rory lives in a world of mystery both unlike ours and familiar in odd places. The men of his island have all moved away and now the time has come for him to escape the nagging hegemony of women who dominate his land and join three mysterious strangers on a quest to the Mainland. Yes, there is a ring involved, but the weight of nature, legend, myth and the sacred aspects of magic are what make Treadwell's books both poetic and entrancing. Treat yourself to all three.
All the men are dead - now it's the boys' turn. On a tiny archipelago, cut off from the rest of the world by a cursed sea, a handful of survivors live a precarious existence, clinging to their memories of the time before magic and their hope that those times will return. As far as he knows, Rory is the only boy left. Then the man comes, weaving his tales of a quest to find a powerful ring, and Rory finds himself embarking on a journey through terrors and marvels, once more in the world of men. And the moment of reckoning, when it comes, will bring an end to stories unimaginably older than his own.

James Treadwell was born, brought up and educated within a mile of the Thames, and has spent much of his life further reducing the distance between him and the river. He studied and taught for more than a decade near the crossing at Folly Bridge, Oxford, and now lives within sight of the Tideway in West London.More About James Treadwell
