Sarah Broadhurst's view...

It must be exceedingly difficult for an author to follow a hugely successful debut but S J Watson has risen to the task. Very different from his sensational Before I Go to Sleep this is nonetheless a terrific, tense read which really will keep you guessing to the end. It concerns the death of a girl in Paris and of her sister’s attempt to discover why. The two girls were alone as children and when one, Kate, has a child, the other, Julia, takes over bringing the boy up. When we join the story Kate has been hinting she wants her now teenage son back, then she is murdered. Julia goes to Paris, meets her sister’s flatmate, boyfriend and others discovering a complex life. I think we become pretty certain who the murderer is until the last half dozen pages and the truly unexpected ending. First rate.

If you like S. J. Watson you might also like to read books by Audrey Niffenegger, Maggie O'Farrell and Jojo Moyes.

Who is Sarah Broadhurst

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. Speaking to this writer, S J Watson said he had (unsurprisingly) enjoyed the phenomenal success of his mega-selling debut novel Before I Go to Sleep, but expressed some trepidation about the appearance of the second book, the hurdle at which so many writers fall. And the response to Second Life, while generally good, has had some dissenting voices – which was to some degree inevitable, given the impact of that first novel. But there is no denying that Second Life shows that S J Watson is incontrovertibly no one-hit wonder. This is another highly convincing crime drama, full of pleasing distinctive touches, demonstrating precisely the same kind of grip as its predecessor. The narrative, in which a woman leads two lives, is handled with satisfying rigour, and it’s probably only a matter of time before the film companies come knocking on Watson’s door as they did for his first book.
