Undaunted by age (she is now eighty), Mary Berry has just recorded a new television series for which this is the accompanying book. Distilled from a lifetime of cooking, she picks her hundred favourite dishes, with an emphasis on preparing ahead to ensure relaxed entertaining. There are stunning canapés – mini beef Wellingtons, and simple starters – homemade gravadlax or smoked trout tians. Main dishes are beef pie with filo crust, venison with cherry and wine sauce, spatchcock poussins with orange sage and ginger, sea bass fillets with brown shrimp and caper sauce, seafood linguine with fresh tomato sauce, or paella, along with vegetable dishes and salads. Hot and cold puddings include winter apple and blackberry crumble tart and delicate apricot frangipane tart and the book ends with teatime treats, everything mouth-wateringly photographed. It is definitely one of Mary Berry’s best and most useful collections – I have not found a single recipe that I do not want to try!
