One of the Top 10 books in the Lovereading Readers’ Choice Book of the Year 2014.

One of our Books of the Year 2014.

Despite borrowing both plot and inspiration from the Classics, The Amber Fury remains an easy, accessible read. Escaping the sudden and cruel loss of her fiancé, Alex moves from London to start a new life in Edinburgh, but she can’t resist the pull of the past and unbeknownst to her, her pupils (and one in particular) become entangled in a further tragedy of Greek proportions. A psychological teaser which combines both menace and tension in equal measures.

November 2014 Debut of the Month.

In addition to our Lovereading expert opinion some of our Reader Review Panel were also lucky enough to read and review this title.

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. When Alex’s fiancée is murdered, her life falls apart. Bitter at the light sentence of the murderer and unable to cope with her loss Alex becomes deeply depressed and uninterested in life. With the help of a kind friend she is given the chance of a fresh start, working in a pupil referral unit in a school in Edinburgh, where she turns to the Greek tragedies as a way to connect to her difficult charges. The tension ratchets up and emotions run high throughout this debut novel by an exciting new talent.

Synopsis

The Amber Fury by Natalie Haynes

When you open up, who will you let in? When Alex Morris loses her fiance in dreadful circumstances, she moves from London to Edinburgh to make a break with the past. Alex takes a job at a Pupil Referral Unit, which accepts the students excluded from other schools in the city. These are troubled, difficult kids and Alex is terrified of what she's taken on. There is one class - a group of five teenagers - who intimidate Alex and every other teacher on The Unit. But with the help of the Greek tragedies she teaches, Alex gradually develops a rapport with them. Finding them enthralled by tales of cruel fate and bloody revenge, she even begins to worry that they are taking her lessons to heart, and that a whole new tragedy is being performed, right in front of her...
