Cop Town by Karin Slaughter

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

Atlanta 1974 and two female cops join forces, one old hand, one brand new. This excellent thriller certainly makes you think about the prejudices of the time and how much attitudes have changed. This stand-alone, part social history, part gripping crime tale, brilliantly written with an effortlessly flowing plot is powerful, tense, at times very brutal, making for uncomfortable reading, but also very thought-provoking. It takes place over a period of eight days. The squad was predominantly male with a lot of bad cops, men returned from Vietnam and still suffering from the effects of the horrors of war. Full of hate, anger and an abiding intolerance against race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, they are mostly very unlikeable, obnoxious and brutal characters. This makes for a terrific read.

If you like Karin Slaughter you might also like to read books by Patricia Cornwell, R. J. Ellory and Tess Gerritsen.

Who is Sarah Broadhurst

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. This is a more ambitious novel than any Slaughter has previously written, but has she pulled off the new challenges she has set herself? In Atlanta in 1974, a savage murder is followed by a major manhunt and tyro cop Kate Murphy wonders if she’ll survive her first day on the job. This is a male-dominated world, and female officers are not taken seriously. Kate and a new partner, Maggie, become furious when they are sidelined in the hunt for the killer. They decide to follow their own agenda – with, inevitably, dangerous and unpredictable results. Karin Slaughter’s first non-series novel boasts an epic panoply of an entire town and police force riven by hatred and mistrust.
