Malice by Keigo Higashino

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

A cleverly written novel describing a murder and a confession, but the investigating police officer does not believe the motive stated. The first chapter is a witness statement, the second the police officer’s analysis and then we get more information from the witness and so on until he confesses in Chapter 5. But this is just the beginning of what the reader comes to believe is a very unreliable narrator’s confession. Why? In a complicated trail of deduction with some interesting points on literature (both the murderer and victim were authors) a fascinating tale unfolds. The detective, Kaga, also starred in the impressive The Devotion of Suspect X.

If you like Keigo Higashino you might also like to read books by Stieg Larsson, Natsuo Kirino and Donato Carrisi.

Who is Sarah Broadhurst

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. Higashino’s Detective Kyochiro Kaga is a wonderfully idiosyncratic character. In this complex tale of cat and mouse, a detective and a writer consider the implications of actions in the past and how events that led to the murder really unfolded. Which one of the two writers was finally guilty of malice? Malice is the latest book by Keigo Higashino, proving again why a million Japanese readers hold him in such high esteem. The Devotion of Suspect X sold an astonishing number of copies in its native country, but has acquired the status of a phenomenon – and even become something of a national obsession. The new book is a worthy successor.

Synopsis

Malice by Keigo Higashino

Acclaimed bestselling novelist Kunihiko Hidaka is brutally murdered in his home on the night before he's planning to leave Japan and relocate to Vancouver. His body is found in his office, in a locked room, within his locked house, by his wife and his best friend, both of whom have rock solid alibis. Or so it seems. Police Detective Kyochiro Kaga recognizes Hidaka's best friend from years ago when they were both teachers. Kaga went on to join the police force while Nonoguchi became a full-time writer, though with not nearly the success of his friend Hidaka. When Kaga suspects something is a little bit off with Nonoguchi's statement, he investigates further, ultimately executing a search warrant on Nonoguchi's apartment. There he finds evidence that shows that the two writers' relationship was very different than they claimed...In a brilliantly realized tale of cat and mouse, the detective and the writer battle over the truth of the past and how events that led to the murder really unfolded. Which one of the two writers was ultimately guilty of malice?

Reviews

'As fiendishly clever as The Devotion of Suspect X...Higashino offers one twist after another, all of which touch on the theme suggested by the book's title. Readers will marvel at the artful way the plot builds to the solution of Hidaka's murder.'
