Sarah Broadhurst's view...

Verhoeven is a brilliantly compelling detective and this is his second outing in English. Confusingly though for English language readers, this book was actually written first, just translated second, after Alex, so if you’re new to the series it’s up to you which way round you want to read them. Irene is Verhoeven’s pregnant wife and whilst he should be looking forward to his imminent fartherhood he instead finds himself at the centre of some rather serious press intrusion and a complicated serial killer case as ‘The Novelist’ recreates grisly scenes from famous crime novels. A breathtaking twist at the end will leave you reeling and desperate to read more Verhoeven.

If you like Pierre Lemaitre you might also like to read books by Camilla Lackberg, Stieg Larsson and Fred Vargas.

Worse still, the press seem to have it in for him - his every move is headline news. When he discovers that the killer has killed before - that each murder is a homage to a classic crime novel - the fourth estate are quick to coin a nickname...The Novelist...With both men in the public eye, the case develops into a personal duel, each hell-bent on outsmarting the other. There can only be one winner - whoever has the least to lose...

Reviews

'Gripping, frightening, intelligent and brilliant'
Marcel Berlins, The Times

'A page-turning race to a grand-slam finish
Laura Wilson, Guardian

. 'Quirky, brutal and not for the faint-hearted, it is crime fiction of the highest class ... Superbly constructed and executed, it puts Lemaitre very close to Ellroy's class. If you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down
Geoffrey Wansell, Daily Mail
