Sarah Broadhurst's view...

August 2014 eBook of the Month.

A truly sensational thriller; intelligent, pacey and unusually beautiful. It borders on the supernatural, taking you just as far as “suspension of disbelief” will allow, and is certainly not just your ordinary cop-chases-serial-killer. Disparate characters drawn from the seething streets of Detroit; a cop, a tramp, an artist, a journalist, a DJ and more; are drawn together by the insatiable, impossible dream that things could be better. It’s not just good, it’s beautiful. Impressive writing, compelling characters, short chapters, fast-paced, all the ingredients of a masterpiece. Highly recommended.

Reviews

Praise for The Shining Girls: 'Brilliant ... By placing the victims centre stage, Beukes celebrates each girl's life and transforms a genre that often seems sickly sensationalist ... It should be the book of the summer
Observer

'Meet the author' 'For sheer, page-turning nerve, The Shining Girls is going to take some beating this summer... You're in for a wild, brutal ride through the 20th century, in the company of one of the sarkiest, most resilient heroines you're likely to meet this year'
Alison Flood, Observer

'An ingenious and imaginative thriller ... compulsively readable'
Sunday Mirror

'If you've got a Gone Girl-shaped hole in your life, try this cleverly constructed thriller'
Evening Standard

'Beukes has enormous fun with the concept ... an entertaining novel that will be read with keen attention'
Guardian

'Confidently written ... this dark tale is told inventively and is full of surprises. Keep the lights on'
Daily Mail

'A killer of a novel ... a brilliant, mess-with-your-mind conclusion'
