The Wedding Gift by Marlen Suyapa Bodden

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

Life on an Alabama estate in the 1850s. The wealthy plantation owner has one daughter, Clarissa, and one illegitimate child, Sarah, a mulatto slave. The girls are brought up together, Sarah with a dream of one day being free. Although it is against the law for slaves to be educated, by sitting in on Clarissa’s lessons Sarah secretly absorbs all she can. Clarissa is pressured into marrying a rich plantation owner to ensure a dynasty for the future. Sarah is given to her as a wedding gift. When Clarissa becomes pregnant their lives change dramatically. Interesting, informative and sometimes extremely distressing, the writing tumbles on to the page in a style that is sometimes difficult, wordy, but always compulsive.
