The Pure Gold Baby by Margaret Drabble

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

Jess is a young anthropologist who has become pregnant by a married man and gives up her career to raise her child. When she realises that her baby is special her life changes more than she could have imagined it would as she strives for what’s best for her child balanced with the needs of her own life. Narrated by a friend it manages to be an involving and touching novel as well as a powerful exploration of the history from the 60s onwards of our treatment of special children.

If you like Margaret Drabble you might also like to read books by Edna O'Brien, Esther Freud and Helen Dunmore.

Synopsis

The Pure Gold Baby by Margaret Drabble

The Pure Gold Baby is the story of Anna, a little girl with a luminescent quality, her mother, Jess, and the community that envelops them. A happy child, Anna is the unchanging core of this journey spanning decades and continents through the lives of those that love her. This profoundly engaging portrait of family, friendship, and the way we care for each other is a powerful reminder, if one were needed, of Margaret Drabble's literary greatness.

Reviews

* Extraordinary and intriguing -- SADIE JONES author of The Outcast *

The Pure Gold Baby is an unexpected gift from a great author. How do we treat the child who walks among us in a different way than most? In Margaret Drabble's hands the answer is with a depth of empathy few master. Fortunately for us, Drabble has spent a lifetime doing just that in exquisitely written prose -- ALICE SEBOLD author of The Lovely Bones

* Moving and meditative -- MEG WOLITZER New Yorker

* Superb ... a richly complex narrative voice achieves a choric magnificence hardly equalled in her earlier work -- Stevie Davies Independent
