Gossip by Beth Gutcheon

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

A suitably gossipy American novel set in 60s New York that should delight fans of American culture from Mad Men to Mean Girls. Gutcheon is quite a renowned American writer, little known over here and the characters she creates are stunningly evinced portraits of a certain type of American in a certain era and she takes you on a vivid trip through their lives.

If you like Beth Gutcheon you might also like to read books by Douglas Kennedy, Mary McCarthy and Liz Klaussman.

Synopsis

Gossip by Beth Gutcheon

Loviah French owns a boutique dress shop in Manhattan. She has two best friends: Dinah - a columnist covering New York's wealthiest - and Avis - a prominent figure in the art world. Despite the deep affection they both feel for Loviah, Dinah and Avis have been allergic to one another since an incident decades earlier that has been remembered and resented. But when a marriage means that Dinah and Avis must set aside their differences, Loviah must manage her two friends' secrets as wisely as she can. Which is not wisely enough, as things turn out - a fact that will have a shattering effect on all their lives.

Reviews

Gutcheon writes poignantly, but with a sharp comic edge, about female friendship, the bleakness of fate and the disappointments of love; and her grasp of the profound connection between clothes and emotion recalls Nancy Mitford at her most seriously frivolous. --Jane Shilling, Sunday Telegraph

A graceful and elegant novel that explores the unintended damage that simmering hostility and sharing confidences can bring, Gossip builds to a stunning and devastating finish. --New York Times

Enthralling, triumphant and true --Boston Globe

A well laid out site, I love the fact that is separates paranormal fiction from fantasy and horror, which other sites don't.

Lovereading is not only an amazing site, but it's one of my very favourites. It's like visiting a fascinating bookstore, but better.
