Synopsis

Raising Hope by Katie Willard

There couldnât have been two more different girls in the town of Ridley Falls. Ruth Teller, raised by a hardworking single mother, barely scraped through high school before she settled into a minimum-wage job. Sara Lynn Hoffman, doted upon by her well-to-do parents, graduated top of her class before conquering college and law school. Their paths shouldnât have crossed again, but life doesnât always work out the way it should, and now they are sharing a house…and more. Together they are raising a girl called Hope, who came into their lives as an infant and changed everything.

Set in the summer of Hopeâs twelfth year and moving back and forth in time, this heart-warming novel is the story of an unlikely family. Itâs the story of Hope, on the edge of growing up and yearning to find out everything she can about her birth parents. Itâs also the story of Ruth and Sara Lynn – the girls they once were and women theyâve become. Finally, itâs the story of Aimee, Sara Lynnâs mother, and Mary, Ruthâs mother, both of whom formed their daughters for better and for worse.

Reviews

‘Raising Hope does just that. A sweet, optimistic debut.â Claire Cook, author of Must Love Dogs

About the Author

Katie Willard

Katie Willard was born in Western Massachusetts and educated at Dartmouth College, where she blissfully studied everything, but especially English literature. After Dartmouth, she went to Harvard Law School for the less-than-sound reason that she got in. She practiced law in Boston for a few years until the best job in the world - being a stay-at-home mom to her daughter Zoe - came along.

An avid life-long reader, Katie dreamed of being a writer in the same way that a person who sings in the shower dreams of appearing on Broadway. She surprised herself when she enrolled in a writers' workshop and started singing outside the shower, so to speak. She wrote her first novel, Raising Hope, during the course of the workshop.

Katie lives in Sudbury, Massachusetts with her husband and daughter, where she enjoys tending her child, her garden and her writing.
