One of our Books of the Year 2014 A haunting story in which Ash and his soldier father are linked by traditions from the past and struggles in the present. When Dad returns from the war, Ash expects him to be a hero. But Dad is far from heroic; he only wants to be alone and Ash doesn’t know how to reach him. Ash takes solace in his running, training hard for his role as stag boy for the local Stag Chase – as his father has done before him. But there are some old ghosts stirring on the hills as well as some hostility from his friends and Ash needs to confront them both if he is to help his father. ~ Julia Eccleshare

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. Ash’s dad has returned from the war, suffering from PTSD. Ash has also drifted apart from his best friend, Mark, who is grieving after his father’s death. The one thing left that Ash enjoys is running in the mountains, as he is training to be the stag boy in the annual Stag Chase. However, ancient ghosts are stirring and the air is heavy with death, which makes Ash wonder if he should still take part in the Chase. This fascinating and evocative story combines folklore with important contemporary issues. (Ages 12–15)

Synopsis

Bone Jack by Sara Crowe

Ash's dad has returned from war. But he's far from the hero Ash was expecting. He's close to a breakdown, lost in a world of imaginary threats. Meanwhile, Ash's best friend Mark is grieving and has drifted away into his own nightmares. Ash's only escape is his lonely mountain running, training to be the stag boy in the annual Stag Chase. But dark things are stirring. Ghostly hound boys prowl the high paths, and in the shadows a wild man watches. Ash begins to wonder if the sinister stories about the Stag Chase are true. Could Mark and Dad be haunted by more than just their pasts?
