Beauty by Sarah Pinborough

Lovereading view...

Winner of the Best Novella at the British Fantasy Awards 2014.

Oh what fun. First we have Sleeping Beauty as a prince, a huntsman and Petra, a girl willing to help them, cut their way through a forest and the prince kissing a sleeping princess. Then we have Beauty and the Beast when the princess turns out to be both, then we have Rumpelstiltskin who placed the spell and must be found to break it. Glorious stuff, what a wonderful idea, blood, gore and sex all racing through the fairy tales combined. You must read it. She has written another called Poison which you should read too.

An effortlessly zesty and playful retelling of Sleeping Beauty, with characters from several other fairy tales making a sneaky appearance. In the form of a novella, this is uncomplicated light reading, apart from a saucy and somewhat sinister few pages that add a deliberate jarring note to proceedings. Adding a modern twist to the traditional “and everyone lived happily ever after”, this is a lively and entertaining read. ~ Liz Robinson

Synopsis

Beauty by Sarah Pinborough

BEAUTY is a beautifully illustrated re-telling of the Sleeping Beauty story which takes all the elements of the classic fairytale that we love (the handsome prince, the ancient curse, the sleeping girl and, of course, the haunting castle) and puts a modern spin on the characters, their motives and their desires. It's fun, contemporary, sexy, and perfect for fans of ONCE UPON A TIME, GRIMM, SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN and more.
