Atonement of Blood

Part of the Sister Fidelma Series
Historical Fiction   eBook Favourites

Lovereading view...

If you are following this excellent series then you know this, Sister Fidelma is no longer a religious, she is now a lawyer, married with a young son. Those new to the series would gain more if some background were known but ignorance will not detract. This is a fascinating insight into the wars amongst the tribes of ancient Southern Ireland (you’ve got to get your head round the names!). Fidelma’s brother, King Colgu, is attacked, the assassin shouting a name as he is apprehended and slain and so begins Fidelma’s next case full of many adventures, rich in detail, tension and character. Highly recommended.

If you like Peter Tremayne you might also like to read books by Ellis Peters, Candace Robb and Lindsey Davis.

Synopsis

Atonement of Blood by Peter Tremayne

Winter, 670 AD. King Colgu has invited the leading nobles and chieftains of his kingdom to a feast day. The gathering is interrupted by a religieux claiming that he has an important message for the King. Suddenly, the man, shouting 'Remember Liamuin!' stabs King Colgu. The assassin is slain but Colgu is on the verge of death. Who is Liamuin? It is a female name? Who is behind the assassination attempt? Colgu's lawyer sister, Fidelma of Cashel, and her companion, Brother Eadulf are charged with solving the mystery. They must journey into the territory of their arch-enemies, the Ui Fidgente, uncover the evil secrets in the dark, brooding Abbey of Mungairit, and venture into the threatening mountain fastness ruled by a godless tyrant. Danger and violence are their constant companions until the final devastating revelation...

Reviews

'The Sister Fidelma books give the readers a rattling good yarn. But more than that, they bring vividly and viscerally to life the fascinating lost world of the Celtic Irish. I put down The Spider's Web with a sense of satisfaction at a good story well told, but also speculating on what modern life might have been like had that civilisation survived' - Ronan Bennett

'Rich helpings of evil and tension with lively and varied characters' Historical Novels Review

'The detail of the books is fascinating, giving us a vivid picture of everyday life at this time... the most detailed and vivid recreations of ancient Ireland' Irish Examiner

'A brilliant and beguiling heroine. Immensely appealing' Publishers Weekly
