Stolen childhoods and harrowing memories haunt lives in this moving and fascinating novel. Written with tremendous compassion and eloquence, the author reveals two tales, two time frames, two tragedies and two guilt-ridden women seeking redemption. The different time frames work perfectly alongside each other, each tale is anchored by the heartrending secrets that have been hidden for years. You are taken on a journey through time and across seas to the inconceivable world of a Japanese Internment Camp during the Second World War. Wolff discloses the unbelievable horrors that terrorised the inhabitants, simply yet vividly bringing to life a different world. Closer to home, the breathtaking Cornish coast has harboured another childhood sorrow. Guilt has been a distressing yet accepted companion for these two women, can reliving the past lay to rest the ghosts that have besieged them? Compelling and convincing, this poignant tale deserves to be heard. ~ Liz Robinson
Isabel Wolff delivers a mesmerising story that delivers a powerful emotional punch. A truly unforgettable portrait of the many aspects of love as Ella, an artist, captures memories, fading beauty and family moments from her sitters. And there's one, engaged to her sister who, as she paints finds she's falling in love with...
A story that flows effortlessly for it is light of touch and has a slick prose style, the characters are warm and funny and the situations real and true to life. Wolff’s novels tend to involve a search for redemption and in this instance, after the death of her mother, Anna takes stock of her life and decides to give up the city job and head for life in the country, but the novels themselves are ultimately uplifting, hopeful and full of the feel-food factor. Fans of Catherine Alliott, Sophie Kinsella, Katie Fforde and Adele Parks will love it.
Full of humour, incredibly moving and so fluently written you’ll devour it in one sitting. Set against the backdrop of a brilliantly inventive TV quiz show, the brainchild of Laura, whose less than keen at the media interest about her and whose past she’d rather remained private. Laura is a refreshing heroine and her rekindled relationship with an old flame comes with excess baggage in the form of an ex-wife who is anything but predictable in her actions and a young child that brings huge joy and frustration in equal measure. Highly recommended.
