Complete Nonsense

Complete Nonsense

Author: Mervyn Peake Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 28/07/2011

'Nonsense', wrote Mervyn Peake, 'can take you by the hand and lead you nowhere. It's magic'. Peake (1911-68) is one of the great English nonsense poets, in the tradition of Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear. His verses lead the reader into places where cause is cut free of effect and language takes on a giddy life of its own. Malicious bowler hats threaten their owners, a cake is chased across an ocean by a rakish knife, aunts become flatfish or live on sphagnum moss. Fully annotated, with a detailed introduction, Complete Nonsense contains all the poems and illustrations previously published in Peake's Book of Nonsense (1972), with forty unpublished poems discovered in manuscripts and thirty from other uncollected sources, including all the nonsense verses from his novels. It reprints complete - for the first time and in colour - the words and images from Rhymes without Reason (1944), and Peake's comic masterpiece Figures of Speech (1954). All the poems have been newly edited, often from Peake's manuscripts, by Robert Maslen, editor of Peake's Collected Poems (Carcanet), and Peter Winnington, the leading Peake scholar and biographer. Peake wrote of the rare art that 'glitters with the divine lunacy we call nonsense': Complete Nonsense glitters with Peake's benign and wayward imagination.

Book of Nonsense

Book of Nonsense

Author: Mervyn Peake Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 01/07/2011

Showcasing another quirky side of the author best known for his monumental fantasy trilogy, Gormenghast, this collection contains pieces recently discovered by the Peake family From the macabre to the brilliantly off-beat, Mervyn Peake's nonsense verse can, like marzipan, be enjoyed by young and old alike. This collection of writings and drawings has been selected by his widow, Maeve Gilmore, and it introduces a bewitching gallery of characters and creatures rivalling the best of Lewis Carroll and Edward Lear--creatures such as the Dwarf of Battersea and Footfruit. Also included are never-before-seen illustrations to the poems not in previous editions. This treasure trove will delight new and old fans alike with its deceptively goofy, actually quite complex verse--it's quirky and comical, occasionally alarming, but always magical.

Titus Alone

Titus Alone

Author: Mervyn Peake Format: eBook Release Date: 25/10/2010

A doomed lord, an emergent hero, and an array of bizarre creatures haunt the world of the Gormenghast novels, considered to be some of the greatest fantasy classics of all time. At their center is the seventy-seventh earl, Titus Groan, who stands to inherit the miles of rambling stone and mortar that form Gormenghast Castle and its kingdom. In this third volume, Titus turns against the iron discipline of Gormenghast Castle, abdicating his throne and setting forth on an uncertain quest-for himself. His pilgrimage leads to encounters with mysteriously omnipotent police and a battle to the death with Veil, a fearsome ogre with a body like whips and a face that moves "e;like the shiftings of the gray slime of the pit."e; In his quest for independence from his legacy, Titus successfully captures the universal struggle to "e;come of age."e; This final installment in the Gormenghast trilogy is a fantastic triumph-a conquest awash in imagination, terror, and charm.

Gormenghast / Der junge Titus

Gormenghast / Der junge Titus

Author: Mervyn Peake Format: eBook Release Date: 06/10/2010
