The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving

Author: Jonathan Evison Format: Paperback Release Date: 10/04/2014

April 2014 Book of the Month. An American road trip with a difference.  Our travelling companions are a surly, wheelchair bound teenager, Trev, with muscular dystrophy and his damaged carer, Ben, a man whose never done care work before.  Trev’s well looked after by a very caring mother but he has an estranged father on the other side of America.  Ben takes Trev to visit him, so lots of adventures along the way, obviously, but it’s the slow revealing of Ben’s background that really strikes a chord and how both men learn from each other.  They pick up a girl and that is charming too.  A lovely, special book.   In addition to our Lovereading expert opinion for The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving a small number of Lovereading members were lucky enough to be invited to review this title - 'A fantastic book, it tugs at your heart strings in an unpredictable way.  A book that is full of humour and compassion for life...A must read for 2014'  Katie Dickinson.   Scroll down to read more reviews.

Beautifully rendered and cinematic . . . A story of survival and the love and devotion between parent and child. -Jill McCorkle, author of Hieroglyphics Dave Cartwright has had enough. After three tours in Iraq he has come home to Vigilante Falls in Washington State only to find that he feels incapable of connecting to the people and the place that once defined him. When tragedy strikes, Dave makes a dramatic decision: he will take Bella to live in a cave in the wilderness of the North Cascades. So begins a compelling adventure, a story of a father and daughter attempting to cope with a breathtaking but harsh environment. Once they are settled in the cave, Bella retreats into a different world, that of a mother and son who had lived in that same space, but thousands of years before, at the end of last Ice Age.
