Christopher Bowden lives in south London. His three previous novels are The Red House, The Blue Book, and The Yellow Room, the first published in 2007.
A quietly compelling read which is as much about the journey of discovery as the actual mystery contained within. Following on ten years after The Blue Book Hugh Mullion discovers a key down the side of a chair cushion and begins to search for answers. A maze sits centre stage, oppressive, dominating, yet reflected beautifully in the art surrounding it. The Amber Maze sits as a standalone short novel and you certainly don’t have to have read Hugh’s previous adventure to start here. Christopher Bowden encourages a simple, almost diary like feel to bring to life the past, as Hugh unravels the mystery in the present. The Amber Maze is a considered, intriguing mystery which unfolds at a gentle pace.
Christopher Bowden has again created an intriguing, literary tale with a well drawn cast of characters. Actor Colin Mallory from ‘The Red House’ can’t help but investigate a mysterious painting. The descriptive quality of the writing takes you to the back streets of Paris, and lets you really feel you are solving the mystery hand in hand with Colin. There is a whiff of the supernatural, however this isn’t a chilling read, instead ‘The Purple Shadow’ is about the art world and about Paris.
An absorbing and stimulating read with a slightly supernatural chill. Barrister Clare needs to keep her well known level head and her mettle about her when a meeting with a clairvoyant leads her to research her own family history. Clare is meticulous in her delving and leaves no stone unturned, which unsettles an eerie slice of history. This is discerning and subtle writing, without cheap thrills, instead layers of tension are built that feel utterly realistic. An intriguing mystery with an added thrill of suspense, like Clare, you may find yourself double checking that you’ve locked your door at night. ~ Liz Robinson Click here to view The Red House, The Blue Book and The Yellow Room by the same author.
With his 3rd novel Christopher Bowden, once again, has created an intriguing, page-turning, literary mystery with a beautifully drawn cast of characters. A common theme in his writing involves 'things found that lead the finders on searches with unexpected outcomes' , so you could see his three books to date, The Blue Book, The Yellow Room and The Red House as a trio rather than a series but all worth a second look and each one can just as easily be read as standalone novels so for those of you new to his writing go for whichever title pulls you the most. His novels make for excellent reading group discussion and in addition to being one of our reading list writers, both Julian Fellowes and actor Derek Jacobi are fans of his work as well. A charming, gentle tale about the discovery of a note in a second hand novel. The note is a quote from T S Elliot’s The Wasteland and reads like a threat. On finding the note Hugh Mullion’s curiosity is sparked and so starts a sequence of events that will unravel secrets that have long been kept hidden. With likeable characters and a fast moving plot you will be swept along in Hugh’s quest to find out the meaning of the note and who it was intended for.
