Die kongeniale Gündgens-Inszenierung am Hamburger Schauspielhaus 1957 wurde seit ihrer Verfilmung 1960 einem breiten deutschen Publikum bekannt. Max Frisch (1911-1991) schafft im erfundenen Modellstaat Andorra Konfliktlinien, anhand derer er beispielhaft Antisemitismus und Ausgrenzung Schwächerer darstellt.
Andorras Bürger sind erschrocken über die Vorgänge im Nachbarstaat, in dem die 'Schwarzen' Juden verfolgen und ermorden. Von manchen Bürgern Andorras sind ähnliche Vorurteile über Juden zu hören. Der Junge Andri leidet besonders darunter, weil er als jüdisches Adoptivkind des Lehrers Can bekannt ist. Andri liebt die Tochter des Lehrers Can, Barblin ist jedoch in Wirklichkeit seine Halbschwester. Während einer Tischlerlehre wird Andri immer wieder vom Meister mit rassistischen Äußerungen provoziert. Als er um die Hand Barblins anhält, weist ihn sein Ziehvater Can ab. Andri sucht die Schuld bei sich und nimmt schließlich die ihm aufgedrängte Rolle des jüdischen Sündenbocks an. Als seine Mutter nach Andorra reist und der Schwindel des Vaters auffliegt, kann Andri seiner Opferrolle nicht mehr entkommen. Zum Verhängnis wird dies für ihn, als die 'Schwarzen' in Andorra widerstandslos einmarschieren. Andri wird als Jude identifiziert und getötet. Die Bürger Andorras weisen eine Mitschuld an seinem Tod von sich."
