Stories About Imagination & Dreams
"It is a common quality amongst us that we all have imagination and dreams. These are positives with which to embrace life and move forward. Unfortunately, our classic literary scribes including Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley, Arthur Conan Doyle, Virginia Woolf and a host of others also bring forth narratives which not only include a darker, more venal side but those of a lighter flavour. 1 - Stories about Imagination and Dreams - An Introduction 2 - The Horla by Guy De Maupassant 3 - The Sphinx by Edgar Allan Poe 4 - The Kiss by Anton Chekhov 5 - The Dream by O Henry 6 - An Unwritten Novel by Virginia Woolf 7 - The Dream Woman by Wilkie Collins 8 - The Queen of Spades by Alexander Pushkin 9 - The Dream by Mary Shelley 10 - A Dream of Wild Bees by Olive Schreiner 11 - Angele Au Couvent by Mary Butts 12 - The Coffin Maker by Alexander Pushkin 13 - The Art of BookMaking by Washington Irving 14 - Plato's Dream by Voltaire 15 - Sredni Vashtar by Saki 16 - The Dream of a Ridiculous Man by Fyodor Dostovesky 17 - A Bread and Butter Miss by Saki 18 - Polaris by H P Lovecraft 19 - The Ghostly Kiss by Lafcadio Hearn 20 - The Looking Glass by Anton Chekhov 21 - The Vampire Maid by Hume Nisbet 22 - Kew Gardens by Virginia Woolf 23 - The Great Good Place by Henry James 24 - The Leather Funnel by Arthur Conan Doyle 25 - A Dream of Armageddon - Part 1 by H G Wells 26 - A Dream of Armageddon - Part 2 by H G Wells"

"Life has the capacity of great moments and attainment, of lives well lived, fulfilling for ourselves and for those we touch. But for others life is arduous. There is no spark to ignite the curiosity, to explore and achieve a stability and a growth to their lives. Indeed their lives, in their own eyes, become almost meaningless, their sense of themselves subsumed under a myriad of problems, whether real or imagined. Seismic events in a life might crush them; the loss of a loved one for instance. Coping is difficult, support hard to find and isolation abounds. We never really know the reason or motivation but sometimes one final, dreadful way out is the solution. In this volume our authors including, Amy Levy, Willa Cather, Honore de Balzac, O Henry, Franz Kafka and a wealth or others explore stories that help us to understand and recognise a tragic circumstance.1 - Short Stories About Suicide - An Introduction2 - Suicides by Guy de Maupassant3 - The Dream of a Ridiculous Man by Fyodor Dostovesky4 - A Hunger Artist by Franz Kafka5 - The Legacy by Virginia Woolf6 - The Informer by Joseph Conrad7 - Claude Gueux by Victor Hugo8 - The Furnished Room by O Henry9 - The Mourner by Mary Shelley10 - The Victory by Rabindranath Tagore11 - A Passion in the Desert by Honore De Balzac12 - An Imaginative Woman by Thomas Hardy13 - An Egyptian Cigarette by Kate Chopin14 - Volodya by Anton Chekhov15 - Paul's Case by Willa Cather16 - A Slav Soul by Alexander Kuprin17 - Cohen of Trinity by Amy Levy18 - The Story of A Conscience by Ambrose Bierce19 - The Cold Embrace by Mary Elizabeth Braddon20 - Blessed Are the Meek by Mary Webb21 - The Crystal Man by Edward Page Mitchell22 - The End of a Show by Barry Pain23 - An Outcast of the People by Bithia Mary Croker24 - A Responsibility by Henry Harland25 - When Spirits Steal by Philippa Forest26 - The Spider by Hanns Heinz Ewers27 - The Quadroons by Lydia Maria Child28 - Sokratics in the Strand by Amy Levy29 - In the Penal Colony by Franz Kafka"

"Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky was born in Moscow on 11th November, 1821 to distinguished multi-ethnic parents from a Lithuanian background. His childhood years were at the family home in hospital grounds which also contained an orphanage, an insane asylum and a cemetery for criminals. The young Fyodor often disobeyed his father by talking to the ill in the hospital gardens. His health was compromised at age 9 when he experienced his first epileptic fit. By the time he was a teenager both parents had died and he was now enrolled in a military academy where he graduated and eventually became a Lieutenant in 1842. He left military service the next year.In 1846 he published his first novel 'Poor Cow' to great literary acclaim. His next was unable to emulate that success but his short stories helped provide an income. Life as an author was definitely difficult. As he began his next work he was arrested and incarcerated for treason and participation in the political and literary Petrashevsky Circle. Although the case was weak and unjustified he was sentenced to 4 years of hard labour followed by 5 years of military service in a Siberian regiment. Despite the undoubted hardships and setbacks in his life, and whether they helped or hindered his writing, his talents produced many exceptional works of literature including 'Crime and Punishment', 'The Idiot' and 'The Brothers Karamazov'. Dostoevsky's ability to get under the skin of his characters and show the inner workings of their mind was hugely influential and ahead of its time. Interwoven with this was the influence of the broader social, spiritual and political forces at work in a person's psyche. Fyodor Dostoevsky struggled financially and remained in poor health for much of his adult life. He died from a lung haemorrhage on 9th February, 1881.'The Dream of a Ridiculous Man' is one of his many classic short stories that turn a splinter of the ordinary into the spiralling descent of chaos."
