LoveReading Says

A young entrepreneur lets his ambitions drag him into a dark world where power and influence is the only thing that matters. When we first meet Ernest McCloskey he is a young man from reasonably modest means with big aspirations. Not wanting the life his parents were modelling he looks to build his wealth in real estate.

His ambition to get rich quicker leads him to partner with Alejandro Prince, taking bigger risks and getting involved with the mafia with the promise of bigger profits. When tragedy strikes closer to home, what little guiding morality and common sensibility is lost and Ernest submerges himself in a world of revenge and readers are left wondering whether there’s any hope of change or redemption.

Insatiable greed and need for power underlie this thriller as Ernest is determined to become successful, no matter how the goalposts end up changing. Ernest as a character comes across as relentless, determined to do what is needed to make money, and I liked the steadying presence of Jeanette. I found the character shift from the guileless entrepreneur guided by Jeanette and Alejandro to the ruthless man that was apparently aware of everything all along that Ernest becomes after the tragic event to be a bit sudden, it begs the question if he was aware of the nature of those around him, why he let himself be led into such dire straits at times.

There are some interesting side storylines that are included that are tangentially related to the main plot. The addition of the powerful secret club adds a thriller aspect of the story as the powerful prey on their victims, and is arguably a useful plot device for showing how far Ernest has fallen and for devising the path of some of the characters.

The additional time spent fleshing out the backstory of side characters like Quan were compelling to read and made the direction of his particular story more impactful. Ernest McCloskey’s final fate, whether it be total downfall or redemption is left in the air as we await a future book. As are questions about who the “Fletcher” in the series name, The Fletcher Clan, is referring to.

This book is the start of a series that would appeal to readers looking for thrilling stories of corruption, moral downfall and revenge.
