The Kabul Beauty School by Deborah Rodriguez

The Kabul Beauty School

The Real World   eBook Favourites

Lovereading view...

It was a brave and optimistic act to set up a Beauty School in Afghanistan. The pupils were there – too many women desperate for work and a means to support themselves and their families but so was the opposition, unbelievable at times. We know that Afghanistan is a violent, patriarchal society and the Kabul Beauty School shows only too graphically how this affects women. Deborah Rodriguez is down on the street, not stuck in a far-away office so has real experience is of the day-to-day struggle to survive, the sad ultimate failure of her Kabul Beauty School presaging what is in store for this country that she had grown to love.

Synopsis

The Kabul Beauty School by Deborah Rodriguez

Arriving in Afghanistan in 2002, just after the fall of Taliban, and with nothing more than a beauty degree and a desire to help, Deborah Rodriguez set out on a course of action that would change her life and those of many Afghan women. Learning that the once proud tradition of beauty schools had been all but destroyed, Deborah set about training women to become beauticians and helping them support themselves. Rodriguez was entranced with the delightful personalities that emerged when her students removed their burqas behind closed doors, making some of the closest friends of her life. She also found the strength to leave her own unhealthy marriage and allow herself to love again. The Kabul Beauty School is an eye-opening, inspiring and enthralling tale of an extraordinary community of women, all with stories to tell.
