The Girl with All the Gifts by M. R. Carey

Lovereading view...

Mutant parasitic fungus leaps the species barrier and flies around the world as a plague. Most humans are infected. The fungus attacks and destroys the brain, the human is effectively dead and the host sits and waits until it can detect food – living flesh of any type. Then super-powers switch in. These beings roam the land but there are isolated camps of ‘survivors’. We start our tale in one such camp where fungal children (Hungries) have been captured and are being either ‘taught’ or ‘analysed’. It seems a new race must emerge. How and on which side is at the centre of this captivating tale mixing science fiction with a human interest tale. A good page-turner, well drawn and woven together in a strongly plausible fashion. Nice one.

If you like M. R. Carey you might also like to read books by Lauren Beukes, Neil Gaiman and Justin Cronin.

Synopsis

The Girl with All the Gifts by M. R. Carey

Melanie is a very special girl. Dr Caldwell calls her 'our little genius'. Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don't like her. She jokes that she won't bite, but they don't laugh. Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children's cells. She tells her favourite teacher all the things she'll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn't know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.
