The Dead Can Wait by Robert Ryan

Lovereading view...

A Maxim Jakubowski selected title.

Dr John Watson - yes, Sherlock Holmes' trusty sidekick - has survived the trauma of World War One and the Flanders fields and in the 2nd of his post-confict adventures (following Dead Man's Land) he is called back to investigate by the army who are developing a tank prototype in the Suffolk countryside with fatal, unexplainable consequences. The doctor cum detective, with some assistance from a familiar if now elderly face, and new acolyte motorbike, redheaded nurse Mrs Gregson is confronted by a female-staffed German spy network and the terrible aftershocks of the trench war. Historical crime at its very best.

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

The second of this author’s Watson mysteries has Sherlock Holmes’ sidekick, a doctor in the First World War, return home to investigate seven deaths in a secret establishment at Elvedon outside Norwich. A special weapon is being developed. There is a slight, easy-read, period feel to the writing. It’s an interesting area and a good place for a murder mystery. Nice one.
