Inside the Window: Realizations before Maintenance on GLP-1 focuses on the author's experiences of rebuilding your life in order to successfully maintain a healthy lifestyle for the long term during the window of opportunity afforded by GLP-1 medication. How GLP-1 reduces the food noise and allows him the space to address his relationship with food, alcohol and his own self perception. French shares the benefits he experienced from the GLP-1s but the focus here is on the bigger picture and the responsibility to make the wider lifestyle and attitude changes that would set him up for success in a future where he is no longer on the medication.

Structured to share his struggles with weight management before the working through each aspect of his life that he has changed during his window means this is a very easy book to follow, with clear chapter headings which would make it easy to return back to specific sections if you were interested in a certain area or wanting to compare experiences.

As someone who hasn’t used GLP-1 but has seen online discussions as they arise, it was interesting to read a level-headed first hand account. With GLP-1 medication still being so new, these first hand accounts are beneficial for those considering the medication, or wanting to learn more about taking them effectively.

I also think that a lot of this book still remains applicable to readers who haven’t used the medication but are still interested in building a healthy lifestyle. As someone who has recently slipped into calorie focused label reading when I’m shopping, Chapter 7 reminded me to take a step back and look at the bigger nutritional picture too.

I found myself relating to the author’s experience of sleep in Chapter 5, tending to categorise myself as a night owl but also experiencing the benefits when I do sleep earlier and get up earlier. Something I’m trying to work on.

Inside the Window is above all a constructive look at building a healthy lifestyle in today’s society. I liked how the journey reframed from being just about weight to being about what you become able to do: making tasks easier, spending time playing with your children. In a world where it’s so easy to focus on the scales and the image above all, this book provides insight that is positive but is most beneficial for being so grounded and considered.
