LoveReading Says

Mike Grimshaw, a grocery store owner in a quiet Suffolk village, plays guitar and performs at weekly Open Mic nights at his local pub, The Whipped Peasant. Mike is seriously considering a romantic relationship with Jules, the village’s resident midwife.. However, Jules’ affections are also on the radar of the pub’s charismatic French chef.

A second storyline revolves around the second pub in the village, The Startled Goose. The owners of that establishment are jealous of the popularity of The Whipped Peasant’s open mic nights, and set out to establish their own amateur night, culminating in a Battle of the Pubs' finale. The author has cleverly used phonetic spelling in the dialogue; this provides the reader with a good grasp of the local Suffolk accent and language that is unique to the area.

The many references to bands and music of the era will appeal to readers who enjoy stories based on music and the music industry. The storytelling is contemporary, witty and funny, although I did find some of the comedic passages in poor taste. The story has all the elements we expect from a satire – promises of romantic liaisons (some not so welcome), solid friendships based on the sharing of small village experiences, and a wide cast of quirky characters who the author describes in clever, descriptive language.

I do consider that the impact of the writing was spoiled by many grammatical errors, and the events that occur in the storytelling often go down a haphazard path. I have rated the book three stars out of five, my rating would have been higher if these issues had been addressed during editing. Overall however, Adrian Cory has written an entertaining page-turner.

The descriptive language is engaging and consistent, transporting the reader to the destinations and experiences described. The book will appeal to readers who enjoy a fast-moving comedic story.
