"The heart-warming story or rebuilding your life again after a devastating loss."
The Next Breath by Laurel Osterkamp is such a lovely hope-filled story. It only took a few chapters before I realised I would be an emotional wreck by the end of the book (and I was right). We follow Robin, reliving her college love with Jed and her struggles to open up her heart again to Nick while rehearsing for the play that Jed created for her. I liked the way each section was split, with date and time stamps taking the reader between Robin’s college life in the early 2000s and the up to date timeline in 2013. I also found the characters really well-written, Robin is so endearing and even though you can understand her actions you hope that she is able to find happiness with Nick by the end of the book. While I wasn’t reading I found myself distracted and drawn back into their world, dreading the final sections detailing her relationship with Jed as he suffered with Cystic Fibrosis and hoping Robin could share her past with Nick and open up her heart. The Next Breath is both heart-breaking and heart-warming, it’s filled with love, hope, loss and second chances and the opening night of Jed’s play is a fitting celebration and send off as well as conclusion to Robin’s story.
