"A heartfelt and compelling story about those who are willing to stand up for what they believe in and live according to who they are. "
Poole of Honour is the second book in the Poole Legacy series that focuses on three generations of the Poole family. However you don’t need to have read the first book to follow this one, I didn’t notice it was a sequel until after reading and the generational focus allows the book to be read as a standalone very easily.
Set in London in 1965, this book focuses on Daniel Poole, a young barrister with a strong moral code wanting to prove himself, feeling strongly about his work as a defence lawyer and defending those in need, in particular the men targeted by the Sexual Offences Bill. Daniel finds himself caught between trying to pursue his own career while proving his loyalty to his family and providing for, but also being present for, his wife and their child that’s on the way. Daniel is pulled from pillar to post all the while realising the work he’s doing lands closer to home than he is able to admit.
This story is very well written and there has clearly been a lot of research gone into 1060’s Britain to help bring the London of this book to life. The strong character focus made me connect with Daniel. I felt how trapped he was, with his family, his wife and his work all expecting so much of him, the feeling of overwhelm emanating off the page. Poole of Honour is a powerful story about identity, legacy and (not surprisingly, given the title) honour.
