"A cleverly plotted mystery that is a magic trick in its own right."
Magician Lucy Moon is steeling herself for a trick that has always terrified her, the Sawing Box, and tonight it’s performed with the exact box linked to the death of a performer years ago. But as the trick begins she discovers her best friend and fellow performer inside the box, a black rose in her mouth.
Reeling from the grief, Lucy is desperate for answers about whether the macabre signature is connected to her own long buried past. Unsure who to trust and haunted by the ghosts of Atlantic City’s history, can Lucy catch the killer? Filled with bluff, illusion and misdirection ZigZag Girl is a twisting mystery with a thrilling magical edge.
Ruth Knafo Setton brings the community of magicians to a vivid life, with plenty of tricks and performances that not only bring the story to life but also help to destabilise the reader. The addition of magic to the mystery made me question everything as Lucy questions everything, which meant the story kept me guessing.
The addition of the second narrative perspective, teasing us with insight into the killer as we try to figure out his identity. The final chapters come to a thrilling yet satisfying conclusion. Much like a magic trick, ZigZag Girl intrigues, and confounds its audience before providing the grand reveal. A cleverly plotted mystery that is a magic trick in its own right.
