We rejoin The Nessemiah in book three: The Awakening. The story flows straight on, even with continuing chapter numbers so it is vital that you begin the story with The Strains of Malice. This multi narrative epic fantasy continues to deliver the breadth of a George R.R. Martin book, The malicious Prince Magnus on the hunt for Jake and Emilya who evade him.

Alicya remains in hiding though her trajectory may be bending towards home. Davy, recovering from the mining disaster, still searches for a new life. Will takes a risk to escape for help. Princess Madeleina faces abolitionist threats while touring with her musical performances. To the south, Emperor Calidius continues to rule with callous wrath and Drax fights to survive as a Gladiator.

As all these fights and conflicts rage on, the reader knows something far greater than any of them is approaching, but will their quarrels put them into a greater danger or move them towards safety?

The plot of the book moves at a steady pace, packing a lot in before the fatal day is scheduled to occur. The multiple narratives are handled well, with enough time to settle back into each perspective and story before leaving them, sometimes at a crucial moment that leaves you keen to come back. A detailed and gripping read for epic fantasy fans, this vast world has plenty to sink your teeth into and I’m looking forward to diving into this story’s conclusion.
