Hamza Yassin has the gift of being able to communicate his love for nature through his thoughts and feelings as well as his words. I devoured and adored Be a Birder, in which he introduces 50 birds that can be found in the UK, and he is as generous and empathetic in Homewood Bound. In fact it is his pure infectious joy for the outdoors that shines through in this book.
He takes the reader with him on a journey through the UK, back to his home in Ardnamurchan located on the west coast of the Highlands of Scotland. He says that he wrote this book to celebrate some of our less well known creatures and plants. As well as sharing his own knowledge and stories, he speaks to different experts, and studies different conservation movements and methods.
I love how encouraging he is, he helps you to see the natural environment that surrounds you, even in a city. He acts as a human bridge between the known and unknown, between what is and what could be, and the failures and triumphs of humanity and our effect on nature. Above all he is encouraging as he offers a hand, a link, to explore and connect with the world around us.
