Out of work actress and newly-recruited spy organises a hen party to join her on her first mission. As it’s phrased in the synopsis, “what could possibly go wrong?”. It turns out a fair bit, but Dusty’s never-give-up and solution based outlook sees her successfully spinning many plates throughout the book, even when things get slightly more chaotic. I found Dusty to be quite glib at the start, a struggling actress working a secretarial job she despises, while her friends are hyper successful and her overbearing family stress out over her sister’s upcoming extravagant wedding. As the storyline goes on, underneath the peppy façade is a character that is inventive and determined. Her pairing with Yazmin Khan sees both characters flourish.

This is a humorous narrative. In the way Dusty stumbles into undercover training, working alongside seasoned professionals, this story reminds me of The Flight Attendant. Dusty’s enthusiasm never falters and drapes a rather dark plot in a bright and sparkly designer scarf. Although her first mission is more Johnny English than Jason Bourne, happening to be in the right place at the right time, we see character development as she discovers her identity and what she may have finally found a job that suits her (with her past attempted careers standing her in good stead). An entertaining spy story, with a little bit of chaos and a lot of fashion thrown into the mix.
