A beautifully thoughtful and fascinating book exploring the changing Arctic region. Author Neil Shea writes for National Geographic, and one of his big first assignments in 2005 was based in Canada observing an Arctic phenomenon. While the story was ultimately killed, this was obviously a pivotal moment in his career and has led to the writing of this book which follows his observations and travels through the area he describes as Indigenous nuna.
I have been to some of the areas described in Frostlines, locations in both Alaska and Canada, and in his final chapter, Kirkenes in Norway, and it was absolutely fascinating for me to explore again the areas I had visited, this time with his knowledge. He takes you with him on his journey, describing in rich vibrant detail so you are able to see and feel through his eyes and thoughts.
He explains that the Arctic he saw in 2005 no longer exists, and that he assumes that you already know that most of the changes are from human-caused climate warming. And so, as he explored this changing world, I learned of vanishing, famine, and death, I also explored the concepts of sharing, community, and traditions within the isolation and decline.
It made me so sad, and you can feel his pain for the decline of this region even as he shows its beauty. Important, memorable, and compelling, Frostlines sings the song of a vanishing world.
