A short story collection with recurring themes of love and loss and self. ‘Computer Love: A Digital Anthology’ by Ricardo Pierre-Louis features eight separate and well-formed narratives of various lengths. From a child eager for affection from his mother to a God left unsatisfied by the world he’s created, each short short story has a unique take on the themes of love, loss and identity.
The stories are evocative: some are poignant, some contain humour, some contain scenarios that make you question your own response to the situation and the characters. ‘Marley’s Mom’ is a powerful story for the collection to start with, a sad tale that powerfully demonstrates Marley’s naivety with subtle hints of more going on than comprehended by our little main character.
‘The Golden Lion’ is a briefer snapshot that to me explores a misguided love for the planet and extraordinary beasts within it, by keeping them caged. However, this one came across to me as more vague than some of the others which I think could leave it open to different interpretations.
‘Mr. Lewis & The Lucky Zebra’ looks at love in terms of obsession and addiction as a gambling addict tries to protect his marriage and keep secrets while trying to pay off his debts. This is an interesting collection that I think can be read a story at a time or all at once. The writing flows well and each story is well constructed, especially considering the brief amount of time the author has to bring you into each world.
I was drawn in by each story and I think they all have a different perspective to offer. An easy to read collection.
