Ehrkon is a fugitive after turning his back on the militia, looking for revenge for the death of his family and with god-given firepower, he finds unlikely allies and a rebellion. Tren is a wily, charismatic, fearless young thief with his own special abilities, taking us through the ruthless streets as he takes on increasingly dangerous jobs.
Inferno’s Silence is a gritty dark fantasy. I loved the concept of the setting, a civilisation all crowded and stacked on top of one another the lower sectors can't see the sun. I was picturing the closes of Edinburgh as Tren walks us through the Fifth Sector, but with more futuristic fantasy additions of cables and the looming tower.
I found Ynka’s storyline to be the most intriguing, I feel she had the longest journey of either of our characters, being betrayed and cast out having to fight to survive and understand her strange new powers. And what powers! It made me wrinkle my nose but I liked the unique process of her transformation, I think it worked really well with the brutal nature of the world as a whole.
Tren’s narrative voice echoes off the page, an artful dodger type wiley thief, his monologued charm and confidence was entertaining to read and I enjoyed returning to his storyline. This story has loads to offer fantasy readers. It has rebels, monsters, magic and righteous gods. There’s action, high stakes, vengeance and smart dialogue. All of this delivers a complex and absorbing read.
