A Maxim Jakubowski selected title.

A new anti-hero for Hawks, author of the semi-mystical dystopian adventures of the Fourth Realm Trilogy. Jacob Underwood, following a bad motorcycle accident from which he was brought out of a coma, genuinely believes he is dead, which allows him to become a hitman without need for remorse or emotions. He is employed by a shadowy large corporation to do their dirty work until the day he is assigned to eliminate Emily Buchanan, an employee who has taken flight with important information they do not wish to see spreading. Does being dead mean you are a machine with no feelings? Soon, Jacob is confronted by untold dilemmas and unsure on what side of the fence he is. Will he regain his humanity? High octane stuff with a sprinkling of existential philosophy. Not your common run thriller but compulsively readable.

Sarah Broadhurst's view...

When John Twelve Hawks’ first book,  The Traveller,  came out it blew my mind.  This book is very different but still shows a worryingly believable near future where government surveillance is everywhere.  Slipping through the cracks in the system is Jacob Underwood, a wonderful narrator whose problems seem unusual but whose voice makes us understand him almost immediately, and indeed come to like him very much.  An excellent anti-hero with seemingly no morals or scruples, pushed to the limit by circumstances and forced to react.  It is fast and slick and highly enjoyable.
