Fire and Brimstone by Colin Bateman

Lovereading view...

You can’t have a novel set in Ireland without the church being involved somewhere along the line. Fire and brimstone used to be called down from the pulpit to frighten the sinners. Today it is in response to the drugs war. Dan Starky was first introduced to us many moons ago in Divorcing Jack. A young journalist then who has found himself in many a scrape over the years, is now back in his middle age with his distinguished voice and light humour. He’s got two cases to investigate. The bombing of the Braxton Abortion Clinic, rather appropriately nine months after it opened, and the disappearance (kidnapping?) of a hugely wealthy businessman’s daughter. He has a wonderful, infectious style which whips you through the pages. Great fun.

If you like Colin Bateman you might also like to read books by Christopher Brookmyre, Carl Hiaasen and Chris Haslam.

Synopsis

Fire and Brimstone by Colin Bateman

When Alison Wolff, the daughter of a billionaire media mogul, disappears following a massacre at a party, nobody knows if she has been kidnapped or killed. Dan Starkey is hired to find the missing student but he soon discovers that Belfast's underworld has changed since his days as a journalist. Old tribal conflicts have been superseded by drugs and greed, defended with a ruthlessness undreamt of even in the worst days of The Troubles. In response to the drug wars, a new church movement has sprung up and when they are blamed for the firebombing of the controversial new abortion clinic, Dan is asked to prove their involvement. In a Belfast rapidly descending back into chaos, Dan finds himself caught in the violent struggle between rival gangs, one of which claims to have God on their side...
