Sarah Broadhurst's view...

What inspires truly great poetry? This novel would have it that the likes of Byron and Shelley were influenced by the supernatural, a powerful vampiric force draining the life force in return for genius. Now this otherworldly being is concentrating on the Rossetti family, Christina in particular. The world of Victorian art and writing is dark and strange enough and with the second layer of supernatural terror it becomes a macabre adventure unique among recent novels. Tim Powers is a strong writer with many great books to his name. Science fiction and speculative histories like this one are masterfully handled. His writing is tense and thrilling, the plots complex and rewarding. This novel is awesome on its own but I would also recommend that you check out his others.

If you like Tim Powers you might also like to read books by Jon Courtenay Grimwood, Dan Simmons and Neal Stephenson.

Hide Me Among the Graves by Tim Powers

London, 1862. A city of over three million souls, of stinking fog and dark, winding streets. Through these streets walks the poet Christina Rossetti, haunted and tormented by the ghost of her uncle, John Polidori. Without him, she cannot write, but her relationship with him threatens to shake London itself to the ground. From multi-award-winning fantasy writer Tim Powers: a secret history of 19th-century London.

Praise for Tim Powers:

'Tim Powers is a brilliant writer... Wonderfully original' William Gibson
