The past crashes across all four generations of this now extended family which we first met in The Flowers of the Field and gathered more about in A Flower That’s Free, but fear not, for you will thoroughly enjoy this without knowledge of the past two books. We are given what backstory we need so all is tidied up. There are some great characters, the genteel middle-class elegance nicely portrayed and the whole ups and downs of the family a joy to be part of.
