Lauren Lucien is fresh from university and is well versed in the needs of hungry students. Her book provides the recipes for making good filling food but she’s also paying attention to health, budget concerns and timing. There are plenty of ideas for adapting the recipes and notes on what goes with which.
Lauren Lucien is also aware that few students will have a vast array of cooking equipment - she keeps it basic using mugs, spoons and of course hands. Student or not, anyone wanting to make good food on a tight budget could benefit from her experience.

Lauren Lucien on why she wrote Student Brain Food...
As a student I discovered that there was a direct link between what I ate and my energy
and concentration levels when studying. Trying to ‘boost’ my body and mind with
energy drinks just made me feel sick after a while, and I was eating crisps and junk food
because of the stress of not being able to revise and write essays in the way I knew I
could.
Then there was the financial drain – takeaways, snacks from the pasty shop and
other fast food was expensive, plus I’d be hungry an hour later because it wasn’t a filling
or balanced meal. So with all these things in mind, I started to change my eating and lifestyle habits bit by bit and found that the food I made myself was cheaper and healthier than junk food.
I wrote Student Brain Food to help more students save money, eat better and
understand what they are eating. I teamed up with Dr Opara, Principal Lecturer in Nutrition
at Kingston University, London, to bring you an intelligent student cookbook that feeds
your body and your mind. Enjoy learning more about nutrition, saving money and of course trying out all the tasty recipes in Student Brain Food!
'Hello, and welcome to my student cookbook. I'm Lauren and I started collecting recipes towards the end of my final year. Eating healthily on a budget was difficult at first, but by the end of university I was a dab hand at knowing what food helped me to study better and how to plan and budget for my meals.
