A deeply moving story of how Demi adapts to life following meningitis. Demi recovers but she is profoundly deaf. All the certainties in her life are removed and she has to start again at a new school. Demi tells how she adapts from one world to another, learning signing, learning not to laugh out loud too much as it is hard to tell how loud it will sound to others and all the other small things that make the world of the deaf different.
