"A gorgeous generous book highlighting the importance of the sounds that can be discovered in nature, QR codes lead to the sounds, allowing a full immersion."
Well this is a truly beautiful book, it not only features hugely fascinating information about our natural world, it also contains QR codes which link to recordings of natural sounds, not just of animals but of the planet itself. The author Justin Anderson is an award-winning producer and director of wildlife documentaries, he explains that: “New technologies are now allowing us to ‘break the code’ of animal communication.
Species that are very familiar to us and have been historically well studied are suddenly being revealed to have a huge level of sophistication in their vocalisations”. The author says: ”I firmly believe that taking the time to listen to our natural world is one of the best ways we can hope to reconnect with nature”.
There are eight chapters ranging from ‘Hidden Conversations’ to ‘Silence and Storm’, followed by the epilogue explaining how to connect to the sounds we hear, and listen properly. The author’s own voice is eloquent, he leads you into nature and allows you to bear witness to the most wonderful world, but also to heartbreaking detail that we are subjecting this world to, it is hard to read and hear but vital.
Conservation is absolutely key, and there is also section on how we, the reader, can help. He says: “Our planet is alive with incredible natural sound. There has never been a better time to listen in to what it is saying”. This would make a fabulous gift for anyone interested in nature and preserving our natural world.
A LoveReading Star Book, Wilderness Songs is a crucially important read, full of energy and beauty, and is highly recommended.
