I read this in one sitting, once I’d started I just couldn’t stop. Formerly National Crime Agency and now private detectives, Washington Poe and Tilly Bradshaw take on their first case of a missing mother and end up in a whole steaming heap of trouble. A master of his craft, if you’ve not yet had the reading pleasure of meeting award-winning and bestselling author M.
W. Craven then I truly believe you’ve been missing out. The Killer’s Mark forms part of his Washington Poe series which started with The Puppet Show and I can recommend at the highest level. Deeply dark and amusing, the clever corkscrewing plots are balanced beautifully against a friendship between the two main characters which allows empathy and kindness a seat at the table.
A word of warning though, this isn’t for the faint-hearted as extreme violence and monstrous criminality are common themes. Here, Poe and Tilly are joined by a teenager who is more than capable of ruffling a few feathers herself. The insertion of this new character works, with humour sparking and setting the pages on fire.
The plot is as devious, thrilling, and twisted as you could hope for and as one of my favourite reads of the year this joins our LoveReading Star Books and it’s a Liz Pick of the Month. With a whopping thumbs-up from me, The Killer’s Mark is an exhilarating ride, and reading doesn’t get much better than this!
