A fast-paced, gripping espionage thriller that sees the hunted becomes the hunter as Danny Marshall searches for answers. The first page puts us right in the centre of the action in Death’s Last Trick as Danny Marshall is part of a convoy attacked while transporting a shipment of weapons in Kenya.

Hunted and trying to stay alive as those around him die, Danny needs to figure out what’s happening and who is behind it so he can seek his own justice. Meanwhile CIA agent Katherine Anderson is chosen to lead an international arms-dealing investigation that soon becomes bigger than she expected, but wanting to see it through to the end might lead to the end of her career.

With arms deals, double crossing, corruption and those in power out to leave no evidence behind, Death’s Last Trick is an action-packed story to be read without knowing who to trust, or what might be lying in wait next. This espionage thriller is a fast-paced and gripping read, the pages turn easily and swiftly as Danny starts off being captured and hunted before deciding to embark on the hunt himself.

We get some insight into Danny’s past, with snippets of memories from the military and references to why he tries to keep everyone at a distance. I do think that there is still more of the character to be developed and the intriguing end to the book hints that there may be a new path waiting for him.

I liked Katherine’s investigative character. She's more by the book but still shows a dogged determination to see things through to the end. I think the character dynamic between Katherine and Danny works well and I would be interested to see if this relationship will feature in future books. A high-octane start to an easy to read spy thriller series, I would be intrigued to see how the rest of the story unfolds.
