Curses, Keys and Secret Societies by Breanne Randall tells the story of Eléa Deniz, a young woman trying to make sense of her (magical) life. She has returned home to France after four years in California, only to learn that her home has been turned into a graduate school for witches called the Shadowcraft Academy and her father is the headmaster. She is not happy about either development.

Trouble is brewing. Eléa soon realises that her father isn’t putting together a graduate school for witches. He’s assembling an army for the impending war between the Shadowcrafters and the Lightcrafters. 

Romantasy fans—those readers who love a romantic story combined with some fantasy—will love this book. The magical academy has an air of Harry Potter about it, but with older graduate students populating it, that allows the spice level to jump. 

This book should come with a health warning that it may induce hunger, with tempting descriptions of delicious French food. It even comes with its own recipes at the end, for anyone who has a hankering for Amaretto cookies, a perfectly cooked omelette or a cocktail. 

Curses, Keys and Secret Societies was a magical tale all around.
