Beautifully detailed, a new world and series is born, and as with all great fantasy and romance blends there is much more on offer here than the fascinating relationships. A world created in hope after destruction, is cursed by a magic that corrupts the user, and as princess Leilani Stellarion learns of a relic that could end the Sickening she attempts to unite fractured lands.
Author Venetia Constantine has built incredibly intricate foundations, and yet as you read you understand there is still much to learn. Trigger warnings exist and are worth noting as this is a story that contains death, disappointment and broken promises as well as hope and determination alongside recognition and understanding of self.
An explanation of the time, seasons, and ages, along with immortals of note, and ‘In the Beginning’ introduces The Cradleworld and the new world Arcelia. From there you are taken to a slice in time and into the tale which is from the dual point of view of Leilani and her betrothed Astrophel.
Here exists a group of characters and Guardians with the weight of their lands on their shoulders, they move across the pages with authenticity, balancing on a razor-sharp edge of decision making. Blurred lines ensure good and bad and evil are not clearly stamped into the story, this creates a wonderful feeling of tension and suspense.
In this tale, trust can be destroyed and hope can struggle, and so I existed in each moment as I read. Vividly immersive, The Last Starborn Seer is a fabulous start to what promises to be an exciting and emotionally compelling new series.
